It is time for another pencil post to break up the fountain pen stuff…though they are all related. These pencils were sold to match the corresponding Vacumatic 51 in both barrel color and cap design. Here is the photo of the pencil before I had a chance to clean and polish it. The twist mechanism works perfectly and the eraser and lead supply are full. I polished the lead cone and cap with a jewelers cloth. I then polished the barrel with scratch remover, finishing polish, and buffed on a coat of carnuba wax. Below is the finished product. The lighting does not do the pencil justice. It is the Cordovan Brown color.

After many attempts, I have finally secured a Pelikan N on Ebay. I am particularly pleased that I was able to obtain the less common model with the fluted clip and milled cap band. According to the item description, the pen was made in ; this means it was made in the last year of production. What a classic pen! Here are the pictures and then a bit of history of the Pelikan and N. The most visible difference was the cap, which grew two cap bands, and the nib, which lost its heart-shaped pierce hole in favour of a circular one.

The barrel became celluloid instead of bakerlite sic and a new shade of green was added to the range. Further modifications were made in , most notably the top of the cap which became slightly more tapered, and further colours were added.

Parker Duofold Fountain Pens Most fountain pen seekers take a stroll through eBay looking for great deals. However, one secret to huge bargains are fountain pens up for an auction that are spelled wrong.

But then along came other examples, marked with a patent date of May 21, , either on the end of the stubby barrel or on the top of the cap: The patent date refers to design patent 42, , issued to Frederick W. Tolfree and assigned to the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company: Between the design patent and sizing up whether Dixon or Mergott were more likely to have made pencils, I concluded that Dixon was the likely culprit. But when it arrived, I noticed one curious detail: Mergott made these, to Dixon, and back to Mergott.

Lawson Valentine founded Valentine and Company, also in Boston, in , and within a few years the two firms merged: In harsh marine conditions, varnishes needed to be especially impervious to water and also flexible enough not to crack and peel on the wooden parts of ships. Graphite, in addition to being the stuff that makes pencil leads write black, is a natural lubricant, which Dixon processed and sold as an engine lubricant for both automotive and marine applications.

In fact, Dixon and Valentine may have been even more closely related than just their affiliations as advertisers in automotive and marine circles: Dixon also marketed a line of graphite paints, made with flakes of graphite rather than lead or zinc: I went back to do some checking on Frederick W.

History[ edit ] Early prototypes of reservoir pens[ edit ] An early historical mention of what appears to be a reservoir pen dates back to the 10th century. According to Al-Qadi al-Nu’man d. Leonardo’s journals contain drawings with cross-sections of what appears to be a reservoir pen that works by both gravity and capillary action. Historians also took note of the fact that the handwriting in the inventor’s surviving journals is of a consistent contrast throughout, rather than the characteristic fading pattern typical of a quill pen caused by expending and re-dipping.

While no physical item survives, several working models were reconstructed in by artist Amerigo Bombara that have since been put on display in museums dedicated to Leonardo.

The Rembrandt range uses a central design theme dating from the Renaissance period known as chiaroscuro; the playful contrast of light and dark. Under light, these contrasts are most profound. The central cast ring is finely engraved with motifs used by Rembrandt.

As recorded by Qadi al-Nu’man al-Tamimi d. A person can fill it with ink and write whatever he likes. The writer can put it in his sleeve or anywhere he wishes and it will not stain nor will any drop of ink leak out of it. The ink will flow only when there is an intention to write. One quill served as a reservoir for ink inside the other quill.

The ink was sealed inside the quill with cork. Ink was squeezed through a small hole to the writing point. Progress in developing a reliable pen was slow, however, into the mid th century. That slow pace of progress was due to a very imperfect understanding of the role that air pressure played in the operation of the pens and because most inks were highly corrosive and full of sedimentary inclusions.

The Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge on May 25, Starting in the s there was a steadily accelerating stream of fountain pen patents and pens in production.

Hello, stranger!

None of the following is my work. I found this article by Jim Mamoulides and I thought it was fantastic! Eversharp Skyliner is Unveiled In , the Wahl company reorganized under the Eversharp name, which was better known in the marketplace because of the continued success of the Eversharp pencil line. The Eversharp repeater pencil, introduced in , was really driving sales and profits for the company, which had fallen far behind Sheaffer and Parker in total sales revenue.

Eversharp engaged industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss in to design a new line of pens and pencils. Eversharp Skyline Standard Size in Gray Modern Stripe c The line was unveiled in the spring of as the Skyliner and supported by a heavy advertising campaign. Interestingly, Eversharp returned to the Skyliner name in advertisements by and appeared to use that name until the line was retired. The Skyline pen is a conventional lever filler with a radical streamlined design, a Dreyfuss hallmark.

Some have noted that the pen shows strong influences from the Dreyfuss designed New York Central 20th Century Limited streamline locomotive. Several have pointed out that the pen, when viewed top down, has the same dome shape as the front of the locomotive and tapers off as the train would into the distance. The clip favors the smoke blowing from the smokestack to the back of the train. The design looks very top heavy capped, especially on the smallest models, but becomes very balanced posted.

The nibs have the typical very smooth writing qualities expected from earlier Wahl Eversharps.

A Vacumatic with Duofold cap? I bought this pen a few years ago both because of its strangeness and because it is actually quite lovely and was cheap. I have always wondered if it could be an original Parker creation instead of an interesting frankenpen. I know that Parker sometimes assembled vacs by mixing parts from old and new stock, but doing so across models seems on the face of it unlikely. I’d appreciate any thoughts you have about this pen, if you have the time if you don’t, I won’t bug you for a reply!

Some sources indicate that the model was produced as far back as , there’s even a dating in the official Parker archives that states that one of the Victories in there was manufactured in This is however highly unlikely, for several reasons. First of all the Victories were manufactured in the UK only and it is highly unlikely that Parker and the Valentine Pen Company, which was later to become the UK Parker factory, had started their co-operation that early.

Secondly the name Victory indicates that the production was in line with the war effort, but by even if Hitler had begun his world domination planning, the war was still four years away.

The Parker Duofold is a range of fountain pens produced by the Parker Pen Company. The first model was produced in and was a large pen, inches long when capped, and made of a showy bright red hard rubber and expensively priced at $, equivalent to about $99 in

Hallmarks and other markings 4. Date codes on Parker Pens Updated Oct In mid Parker began marking most pens and pencils with a date code, both the barrel and the nibs were marked, but lacking a date code doesn’t necessarily mean that the pen was made pre , since many imprints have been worn off with use. The first date codes, found for example on the Vacumatics, consists of two digits, the first one denoting the quarter of production, the second denoting the production year.

Hence a “47” marking on a ‘s pen indicate that the pen was produced in the fourth quarter of , not , which is a common misconception. In the second quarter of this system was however changed to save production time, and a new date code, using a system of dots, was adopted. The stamp initially had three dots and for each quarter one dot was filed down leaving none for the fourth quarter.
