One big problem is that the image is supposed to end up being x pixels that’s megapixels, or 2Gb in RGBI , and VueScan under Linux has some memory limitation So I can either scan at a lower resolution not acceptable for such a small negative or proceed with smaller crops waste of time or run it in a virtual machine under Windows slow. I go for the last option. The scan The previous solution yields raw scans with too much pure black the area around the disk and too much pure white the plastic thingy in the middle to rely on the usual auto exposure mechanisms of VueScan. The first attempt is a disaster: This results in humongous banding on the scans. Apparently the sheet is covering the calibration area of the scanner So on 2nd try I cut a square barely bigger than the disk and place it in the middle of the scanner. As a result the scans aren’t as easy to manage as I expect:

This information is useful to determine the date the film was slit. This is the point of manufacture where the large sheets of raw film are cut and perforated. These date codes are imprinted at that time.
Most film, especially color, was exposed and developed within a few years of this date. To figure the date, you first need to determine which Kodak plant made the film.

The sizes quoted above for half-plate and quarter-plate are a little different from ‘normal’ glass plate sizes. I don’t know why. This allows the photograph to be viewed by a large audience at once. The most common form is the 35 mm slide, placed inside a cardboard or plastic shell for projection. Early slide projectors used a sliding mechanism to manually pull the transparency out of the side of the machine, where it could be replaced by the next image, and it is from this that we get the name “slide”.
Modern slide projectors typically use a carousel that holds a large number of slides, and viewed by a mechanism that automatically pulls a single slide out of the carousel and places it in front of the lamp.

If you need a reason to shoot a roll of slide film, look below. The price, I suppose, so I usually save this film for special occasions. But then I look at a slide on a light table or scanned, and all misgivings go by the wayside: While I will shoot Ektachrome when it returns and with Ferrania not too far away either , Fuji is still my first love for color film. As I look through these pictures, I notice that a lot of them have very striking shades of blue, a favorite color of mine.
The modern slide films are remarkable. Color, in fact, that is supposed to have an archival life of years. Perhaps it would be better to not get attached to anything Fuji makes, because I know that whatever it is, its days are numbered. But then I look back to the point when I knew Plus-X was discontinued, and only bought one roll to shoot, or when I passed up the opportunity to buy a few rolls of Provia X, or Superia in size.
And so, like marrying a person with a terminal condition, all I can do is enjoy the time that is left, knowing that at some point all good things must come to an end.

Carousel slide projector A carousel slide projector. The example pictured is a Kodak Carousel model , dating from the mid s. A carousel slide projector is a common form of slide projector , used to project slide photographs and to create slideshows. It was first patented on May 11, , by David E. Hansen of Fairport, NY. Hansen was an engineer at the Eastman Kodak Company. The projector body contains a motor which rotates the plastic main body of the tray containing the slides while the metal plate is fixed with the opening over the projection gate.
As the tray is advanced, a reciprocating mechanism pushes the currently loaded slide back out into the tray, then the tray is rotated, dropping the next slide into position between the light source and lens. The earliest Carousel models mostly known as the series are compatible only with the slide trays. The Kodak system offered three advantages over the straight-tray, horizontal-feed systems that were then common on the market.
The Carousel tray held slides in place with a locking ring on its hub, preventing slides from accidentally spilling out of the tray if it was dropped. By using gravity to lower the slide into the projector, the chance of jamming was greatly reduced, since a warped slide would not descend past the point at which it encountered resistance in the mechanism. The circular tray also enabled the projector to display automated shows without the need to manually reset the slide tray between performances.

The links you provided are fantastic, but I was wondering if it was possible to find Kodachrome mounted in cardboard or plastic mounts that DID NOT have the word “Kodachrome” on them? For example, I’m working on scanning some older family slides from the 50’s and 60’s. One box has a graphic on the lid that says “Brown Photo”, with the word “Slides” printed to the right.
Probably the name of the local camera store, I would assume. The slides inside are dated “Nov 66” on one side, and the simple text “Color Transparency” and “This Side Towards Screen” on the other. Nowhere does it say Kodachrome – but the film clearly has the raised relief topography of Kodachrome, and it certainly visually appears to be Kodachrome.
