Counting Zanzibar Blue, “there were only really three clubs left,” said Mark J. He considers Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus in Northern Liberties as the third Center City-area club with a full schedule of jazz. Some fringe and rimshot stations are shown depending upon signal strength and location The success of AM radio after the advent of television can be attributed to the late Gordon McLendon, who started station KLIF in KLIF became a trendsetter that was reportedly the most copied station in America. McLendon was one of the creators of Top 40 playlists, a staple of programming that continues today. Whether you knock AM radio today for its relentless static or its lack of music, this is where it all began.

The early 20th century brought the first radio stations to the Dallas-Fort Worth area: AM started out as a freewheeling, ‘throw up a transmitter and go with it’ gamut of radio waves in its earliest days, with a couple of assigned frequencies kc [primarily news and weather] and By mid , all five DFW stations agreed to a timesharing plan on each frequency.

November 11, was declared “National Frequency Allocation Day,” when the Federal Radio Commission FRC, predecessor to the FCC brought organization to the dial by assigning dedicated frequencies to the strongest stations, and culling out many of the small-time opportunists who weren’t serious about broadcasting. Powerhouse WBAP was awarded a clear channel position on the dial; it is one of only a small handful of stations in the nation that’s allowed to blast its signal to a reported 42 states!

AM radio in Dallas-Fort Worth, as with the rest of the nation, was mostly entertainment and news programming in its infancy; however, its value and importance was secured during World War II as the center of information for a concerned public. With the introduction of television to the masses in the late s, radio’s demise was assumed to be imminent.

Introduction TIC’s panel of experts including audiophiles, FM DXers, engineers and tuner collectors and an elite team of trusted contributors have personally used and reviewed hundreds of different FM tuners. We’re also requesting input from readers on about tuners listed in the On-Deck Circle , some of which will be added to the review pages once first-hand information is obtained and as our Editor’s time permits. We focus on tuners, rather than receivers, because a very few receivers come close to matching the performance of that manufacturer’s top tuners, and b we stick to what we know best.

Our primary emphasis is on tuners that were manufactured between the early s and the early ’90s, before home theater receivers largely replaced separate stereo components.

Jazz improvisation Although jazz is considered difficult to define, in part because it contains many subgenres, improvisation is one of its key elements. These work songs were commonly structured around a repetitive call-and-response pattern, but early blues was also improvisational. Classical music performance is evaluated more by its fidelity to the musical score , with less attention given to interpretation, ornamentation, and accompaniment.

The classical performer’s goal is to play the composition as it was written. In contrast, jazz is often characterized by the product of interaction and collaboration, placing less value on the contribution of the composer, if there is one, and more on the performer. Depending on the performer’s mood, experience, and interaction with band members or audience members, the performer may change melodies, harmonies, and time signatures.

Abortive efforts[ edit ] The But only Cass, Steele, Sands, and Bassett had broadcast experience, and not as disc jockeys. The all-female disc jockey lineup endured for a little more than a year, switching in September to a mixed-gender staff, before a major change the following month. It was not the first in New York to do so — WOR-FM preceded it — but it was the one that prospered and became famous for the format and that in turn influenced the rock listenership as well as the rock industry.

The original disc jockeys were Bill “Rosko” Mercer , who started on October 30, ; Jonathan Schwartz , who made his debut on November 16, ; and “the Professor” Scott Muni , who first appeared on November 18, Alison Steele would stay on from the female staff and eventually take over the overnight shift on January 1, The station’s disc jockeys would broadcast in ways that bore out their personalities: Height of influence[ edit ] WNEW-FM was among the first stations to give Bruce Springsteen significant airplay, and conducted live broadcasts of key Springsteen concerts in and ; Springsteen would sometimes call up the DJs during records.

Later, Dave Herman featured a “Bruce Juice” segment each morning. John Lennon once stopped by to guest-DJ along with Dennis Elsas and appeared on-air several other times during his friend Scott Muni ‘s afternoon slot. In addition to music, youth-oriented comedy recordings such as from Monty Python would also be aired. The station sponsored a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden each holiday season that drew reasonably big-name acts. During this era, the station hosted many live broadcasts from the legendary Greenwich Village night club, The Bottom Line.

More importantly, audiences worldwide continue to cherish Marian and her amazing guests in conversation and jazz performance, with all its glorious variations. This was a fitting culmination of her legendary life and her equally legendary radio program.

In Durango, Colorado, that is, this young ragtime artist with a broadcasting degree obtained in California went on the air at KDUR at Fort Lewis College, a low power FM radio station, with a weekly 2 hour show of ragtime music. This was my third broadcasting gig, my first two having been in news and as a morning-drive sidekick for a rock station there aren’t many people driving mornings in this small town. I mostly did it for the experience, but was surprised to find out as I began the second year that I had quite a number of listeners in Durango, and many who taped the shows and sent them to friends.

These were fans of A Prairie Home Companion among other broadcasts, and had trouble finding places to hear ragtime music that they didn’t already have in their collection. Even today such broadcasts are hard to find in most parts of the country. So I have attempted to gather as many of these broadcasts as I can find in this one place.

Some are local only to the broadcast signal on a low-powered transmitter, but many are available over a wide area, or even via the internet. I could not possibly claim that this list is complete or constantly up-to-date due to frequent changes at the local stations. However, it is somewhat comprehensive due to the help of diligent listeners who have written to me.

I can use your help as well. If you know of a show that is not listed here, or one that is listed but no longer in service, please let me know using the email information at the bottom.

You’ll wonder how he weaves those intricate textures. You will be awed. Jon has quieted the noisiest room with his musical prowess and even with this description you still won’t believe it when you see him play.

I was contacted by a G player in the States and a G player in Norway both using the first run, early “prerelease” version of the guitar electronics. The cards are labeled as version “A. You can also see jumper wires soldered across the board. The first time I tried to repair a failed op-amp in a G , I realized that the pin-out documentation was wrong on the schematic. The pin out information was correct on the G Service Manual Schematics schematic, which uses almost the same circuits.

All the G s and G s that I have checked have op-amp pin outs consistent with the G These op-amps are the top three op-amps in line with the pin ribbon connector. This is consistent with the G schematic.
